How do people without cars get their new babies home?
September 24th, 2009 | by Michael |SincerelyYours asked:
It might seem like a silly question, but i’ve been pondering it. I live in a big city, so a lot of people don’t have cars. It seems silly to have them go by a car seat they’re never going use to have someone drive them home from the hospital, so how do they get the baby home?
Does the hospital let people take a newborn on public transportation? Walk?

Carry it on the bus, subway, or whatever….In the country I live in, people have drivers, so you just carry your baby, and hold them in your lap in the back seat.

Baby is yours once you leave a hospital.
I would think parents who use taxis a lot would want the baby in a car-seat/carrier.
Even if they don’t carry a base around, the seat itself can be strapped in.
Most women who just gave birth don’t walk anywhere… but I suppose if you had to.
I imagine you get a ride from a friend, or take a taxi.

Taxi’s. … As long as the mother brings a carseat with her to the hospital or has someone bring one too her for the Taxi ride home the hospital will let mom and baby take a Taxi home (my niece did it). Others just find another person to take them home. I know medicaid has a transportation system setup and one thing they will do is transport mom and baby home 48 hrs after the birth. I don’t drive and my mom is the one that takes me to the hospital and picks me up.

They’ll mail it to you if you have two forms of proper identification. No P.O. Boxes. and you have to sign for it. If you only have one form of I.D. they give it to some random person and hope it finds you.

try calling the police department. they are public servants. ask them to give you a ride or they will offer an alternative. If you tell them you have no money, they will probably give you a ride.

I think it is LAW now that you must show the hospital nurses/staff that you have a car seat with you, and you intend to take the baby home safely in a car seat in a vehicle. I see what your saying about being in a city and always walking, or the bus, and in that case, you can always carry your baby. And possibly, if you tell your hospital nurses/doctors that your planning to take the baby to its new home on the bus, that would be fine, but if you intend to take a taxi home (which I assume you would be after the ordeal of pain endured) then you need a car seat. Its just like riding in a car. If you dont want to buy one, ask around and possibly borrow one from somewhere, but its surely not a waste of money if it is for such a tiny one’s safety.

My mother picked me and my daughter up from the hospital. Even if I did drive, I wouldn’t have been allowed to- I had a ceasar. I have a car seat that sits at my house and when someone comes to pick us up, we put it in the car when they arrive, and take it out again when we get home. It is a bit of a bother, but I manage. Now that I am able to get out on my own, I usually use public transport- most buses and trains are equipped to carry prams, so I don’t have a problem there.

As long as the baby is in a moving vehicle of any kind, it needs to be restrained in the proper car seat. If you were to have a wreck, trying to hold a 7lb baby becomes like trying to hold a 300lb object. They will go flying through the windshield. I know someone who has lost a baby that a way recently, and her husband was holding the baby. Besides, it’s the law. And most likely, the hospital won’t let you leave without the baby being in a car seat. I don’t know of one that will anyway.
You could always call the maternity ward of the hospital and ask, or call your local police department.
